    Publishing Policies

    c o p y r i g h t

      The copyright to all text, images, databases, sounds and "look and feel" systems presented or published on or through the BCIT Web site is owned exclusively by BCIT, and BCIT reserves all rights as of the publication date.

      What May be Copied:

      • publications indicating that copying is permitted
      • publications in which the copyright has expired
      • US government publications (there are some exceptions)
      • works published in countries which are not signatories to the international copyright conventions

      Some Copying of Printed Material is Permissible. The Canadian Copyright Act allows an individual to copy on a limited basis for the purpose of PRIVATE STUDY. This is called Fair Dealing and is limited to purposes of research, criticism, review, etc. Fair Dealing will take the following into consideration:

      1. Effect of copying on the economic reward of the copyright holder;
      2. Type of work and purpose;
      3. Amount copied.

      Exceptions for educational purposes are not considered by the Canadian Copyright Act.

      It is the responsibility of the user to determine whether the copying comes within the parameters of fair dealing, and to obtain copyright clearance when required.
