BCIT, British Columbia Institute of Technology, and BCIT logo are official marks of the British Columbia Institute of Technology and have been in use as early as 1964. Since then these official marks have been only protected in Canada. With the introduction of the Internet and other BCIT business overseas, it became apparent that BCIT should file application to register the "Marks" to the Canadian Trademarks.

The group responsible for protecting BCIT's image and intellectual property * recognized that BCIT is quire different from most educational institutions and is viewed as an entrepreneurial enterprise and that the institute is moving into an era where it will have many commercial competitors. With this in mind, the group recommended that the TM be used discretely behind the trademarks in printed marketing materials as well as in any electronic media. It is recommended that when we use the Marks, we use them either in Block letters or special lettering with the symbol "TM" on its right "shoulder" or "foot". By way of example:

BCIT recently secured bcit.com from an external vendor who was going to launch a free-based email service (similar to Hotmail) at this domain. BCIT has also been granted the second level domain bcit.ca and will introduce it over a two year period at which point bcit.bc.ca will be de-registered but retained under BCIT control.
